Peter Merevin or Merefin, as a moneyer of London, owed one mark towards the aid for the marriage of the king's daughter Matilda in 1167-1168 (Pipe Roll, p. 61, and still owed it in 1171-1172, being then dead (Pipe Roll, p. 146). Some of the witnesses, viz. Rich. Sperewe, Edm. Seintier, and Lewin Besant, also appear among the London moneyers paying to the same aid, and Peter de Salustria ' is perhaps identical with Peter de Salerna ' (ibid.). As Rich. Sperewe was represented by his heirs as early as 1167-1168, the charter must be before that date. The church of St. Helen belonged to St. Paul's (Newcourt, Repertorium, i. pp. 57, 363), and the chapter is represented by the first witness „Nicholas, Archdeacon of London, who was appointed circ. Ii6o, and still held office in 1185 (ibid. p. 58 ; cf. R. de Diceto, i. p. xli). Among the other witnesses are the priests of four London churches, the prepositi' or bailiffs of the bishop's soke, afterwards Cornhill ward, and two aldermen. |
